Firebacks have been around for a long time, and are typically used to protect the  back of the fireplace from heat damage, increase the heat a fireplace radiates into a room, or both. Traditional firebacks are Cast Iron, but now we also use Cast Refractory, or Steel/Stainless Steel. Firebacks have the possibility to reduce the heat on the back wall of the fireplace as much as 1/3, and radiate 30% more heat into the room, though this will vary greatly from fireplace to fireplace, and with different firebacks.
